Umno Delegates Press PAS to Show It Has Changed as Party's Annual Meeting Opens

Umno delegates at the party's annual general meeting said they are willing to leave old disputes behind, but want PAS to show it can act differently, Malay Mail reported on Friday, 11 September 2026.

The sentiment surfaced during the gathering, where a Kelantan delegate offered an apology to PAS, according to malaysiakini.com. A Kedah delegate separately proposed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission be renamed PKRM, the same outlet reported.

Other delegates used the meeting to argue about Umno's place in the ruling coalition. A party veteran warned that remaining in government until the end of the current term would damage Umno, Free Malaysia Today reported. A Perak delegate struck a more upbeat note, saying the party is back in the political spotlight, according to The Star.

Umno's youth chief, Asyraf Wajdi, said the party would not be weakened by what he described as intimidation and slander, The Edge Malaysia reported.

The remarks point to a party weighing its relationship with its old rival against its role in the government it now helps support. The apology from the Kelantan delegate and the call for PAS to prove itself suggest some in Umno are open to warmer ties, while the warning from the veteran shows that staying in power carries its own costs.

What to watch next: whether Umno's leadership turns these delegate views into a formal position on cooperation with PAS or on the party's future in the coalition.
